Istekhara: A Spiritual Tool for Decision-Making

What is Istekhara?

Istekhara is an Islamic practice of seeking guidance from Allah (SWT) before making an important decision. It is a simple yet powerful tool that can help Muslims to make the best choices in all aspects of their lives.

How to do Istekhara

To perform Istekhara, one should first make two sincere prayers:

1.

Dua Istikhara:

O Allah, I seek Your guidance in this matter. If it is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my end, then decree it for me and make it easy for me to obtain it. And if it is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my end, then turn it away from me and make it easy for me to do without it. And decree for me what is good for me, wherever it may be, and make me content with it.

2.

Dua Istikhara after Salat:

O Allah, I ask You to show me the best course of action in this matter. Guide me to that which is pleasing to You and beneficial for me in this world and the next.

After making these prayers, one should perform two rakahs of Salah and then recite the following supplication:

Dua Tawassul:

O Allah, I seek Your nearness through the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the Seal of the Prophets. O Muhammad (SAW), I seek your intercession with Allah on my behalf. O Allah, grant me my request for the sake of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

One should then go to sleep and keep the matter in mind. If Allah (SWT) wills it, one will have a dream that will guide them to the best course of action.
